Patterson House (Washington Club): This Neoclassical style palace on Dupont Circle was once a hotspot for elite society gatherings.
Text
The Patterson House (Washington Club) is a Neoclassical style palace designed by Stanford White of the famous turn-of-the-century New York architecture firm McKim, Mead and White, and completed in 1903.
The house was built for Mrs. Robert Patterson of Chicago. Mrs. Patterson's daughter, Elinor, who was to become publisher of the Times Herald, occupied the house from 1923 until her death in 1948. The house was then left to the American Red Cross and subsequently sold to the Washington Club, a women's club whose membership consisted mostly of wives of prominent men in government and business, in 1951.
The Euram Building (1971), located across Dupont Circle, was designed by Hartman-Cox Architects to relate to the Patterson House, as well as the Dupont Circle Building.
The historic landmark has since been converted to multi-unit residences and now includes a modern addition.
